I wanted to make a few comments on the focus of the final exam based on questions I received. The final exam will cover all the material the is covered in the course. For most topics, you have see questions on the midterm exams. Thermodynamics has not been covered on any of the midterm exams. I said in class that the final exam will not put an emphasis on thermodynamics. If you look at the practice exam, you will see that 2 out of the 8 analytical questions were thermodynamics questions. This represents 25% of the total and is consistent with the time we devoted on thermodynamics. On the exam on May 8 you will find that the analytical questions cover the material evenly. Of course, given the limited time of the final exam, it is impossible to cover every topic we covered in the course. If you do well on the final exam, you have demonstrated you have mastered the topics discussed in the entire course. As a result, an excellent score on the final exam will give you a good course grade, even if you struggled on the midterm exams.
